I Facebook, Therefore I Am

This morning, I had a great email exchange with Chris Boucher of Prince Services. We always bounce ideas back and forth about the role of social media and where social media is heading and how it is being received. Today, Chris shared with me an email exchange he recently had. The individual asked to be kept anonymous, so we will respect that. Anyone who is doesn’t understand the power of Facebook but knows they need to be a part of it really needs to read this account. So here it goes!

“I was once told that, even though I am consumed by and waste irreplaceable hours on Facebook everyday, I do not really understand the sheer scope of this networking tool. Now, alike most people I know, I use Facebook for fun and do not really understand the benefits Facebook provides for enthusiastic, vigilant entrepreneurs looking to network themselves and their ideas. This same individual who swears Facebook is going to be used for pretty much everything in the future, once made me sit down and watch a lecture given by Mark Zuckerberg, the young genius behind Facebook. After being amazed with the eloquence and extensive knowledge of such a young man, I came to the conclusion that Zuckerberg has something here. A big something.

When I was told that Facebook is going to “take over the world”, I became defensive, assuming I knew everything there was to know about posting/browsing pictures, commenting on a friend’s wall, or changing my profile picture over and over. To my surprise, I was proven very wrong. I got a glimpse of how useful Facebook is for myself, and I am beginning to unveil all of the perks of having an account. I am currently in the process of moving out of my dorm on University of Delaware campus. Since it is a month or so into the semester, everyone is pretty much set in their own living situations. However, I came across 4 or 5 places where people already lived, and they were looking for another roommate. When I was given the information of these girls, you can assume what I did first. I Facebook-stalked them. In a matter of fifteen minutes, I found out how each girl looked, where they are from originally, what they are studying, what friends we have in common, and many other useful things you would want to know about a future roommate. And, in those fifteen minutes, I narrowed my search down to one girl. At the time, I thought nothing of what I had done…until I told that certain someone how I cut out the other girls. Immediately, he went off on an enthused diatribe of how our neighboring generations utilize Facebook and proved his point.

I learned that you do not need to know how Facebook can help the smallest or the largest businesses out there. You make Facebook relevant to your own life, let it work for you, and reap the benefits of this phenomenal tool. Throughout my life, I have taken advantage of and looked over the countless ways technology makes my life easier; however, with a little help from a friend, I am now extremely appreciative of what technology has to offer previous generations, my own, and generations to come

So, what do you think?
